Hypothalamic Control of the Anterior Pituitary (2) These discoveries validated the hypothesis proposed by Harris over four decades ago, that chemical substances carried from the hypothalamus to the anterior pituitary by way of the hypophysial-portal vessels are the means by which the brain controls pituitary function. These substances, and their analogues, can be used to stimulate or inhibit pituitary hormone secretion selectively for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
